A group of people arrived by boat in Western Australia’s northern Kimberley region on Friday, the ABC understands.
WA Police have confirmed they are searching a remote part of the Kimberley for a man, who the ABC believes was part of the group.
The ABC understands the group was discovered at the remote Mungalulu-Truscott Airbase on Friday afternoon.
In a statement, WA Police said the man “is believed to have become separated from a group of people in the vicinity of Mitchell Plateau”.
“The land search operation is in its preliminary stages and is taking place in an extremely remote area with challenging terrain,” the statement said.
Police said they had been advised the man “may have been a passenger on an unknown vessel”, but did not provide the source of that information.
The Australian Border Force told the ABC it does not confirm or comment on operational matters.
In November 2023, a group of 12 people landed in the same area after travelling by boat from Indonesia.
On February 16, 39 foreign nationals were discovered in three different locations near the Aboriginal community of Beagle Bay.
Those men were flown to Nauru to be processed.
A Nauru Air flight landed at the RAAF Base Curtin in the Kimberley on Saturday afternoon.
