Occasional Digest - a story for you

Madeleine M. Kunin, Vermont’s first woman governor, was sworn in Thursday and pledged to rekindle the spirit of hope in America’s “limitless dream.”

“That dream must continue to beckon to the next generation, a spirit which instills in our children the belief that anyone can achieve anything in this country with hard work, an education and a fair chance,” Kunin told a joint session of the Legislature moments after taking the oath of office.

The new Democratic governor, who succeeded four-term Republican Richard A. Snelling, becomes one of only two women governors currently in office. The other is Martha Layne Collins of Kentucky.
