Occasional Digest - a story for you

NEAL MAUPAY was on a wind up yet again on Sunday as he labelled Scott McTominay a “fan” after an altercation with the Manchester United midfielder.

The French striker, 27, came off the bench in the 86th minute of Brentford’s dramatic 1-1 draw with the Red Devils on Saturday night.

And while he was only on the pitch for the final stages of the game, he still managed to earn himself a booking.

Maupay became embroiled in a wrestling match with McTominay, 27, who ended up nearly pulling the ex-Brighton man’s shirt over his head.

Both were cautioned for the incident – which occurred in the 12th minute of added time after the two late goals.

But Maupay, who has a reputation for winding up opposition players, did not leave it there as he took to social media.

The Brentford attacker shared a picture of McTominay pulling his shirt as he attempted to throw him off.

And he added the caption: “This fan was desperate for my shirt 😂.”

It comes just two months after Maupay riled Tottenham’s James Maddison by performing his darts celebration.

Yet despite his relentless teasing, Maupay defended his actions in February – while also labelling himself the “most disliked player”.

He told The Times: “People say footballers are boring, then all of a sudden a player does this and everyone goes, ‘Why, Neal?’ ‘He’s the most disliked player.’ Blah blah blah.

“For me, football is a game, it’s entertainment.

“I’m just having fun and, on the pitch, I’m trying to do everything to win.

“If I can say something that puts you off or makes you overthink and make a mistake, I’ll do it.

“People don’t realise how much tension and emotion is involved at the highest level.

“I think it works quite well and if I can get a reaction, great.”
