They more than doubled their medal tally from Sydney 2000 to London 2012, going from 28 to 65 – including 29 golds.

That number increased to 67 in Rio seven years ago, before they secured 64 in the 2021 Tokyo Games.

And now a supercomputer has predicted that Team GB will surpass Tokyo’s tally.

The Virtual Medal Table (VMT) produced by Nielsen’s Gracenote has estimated that Team GB will win 65 medals in August.

This represents a one medal increase on the most expensive Summer Games held three years prior.

It will see them finish third in the medal table – behind the USA with 121, and China with 85.

Among those projected to become Olympic champions are 15-year-old skateboarder Sky Brown and double swimming gold medallist Tom Dean.

Likewise, super-heavyweight boxer Delicious Orie is predicted to match his golds won at the European and Commonwealth Games.

Cyclist Katy Marchant and sprinter Daryll Neita are also among the hopeful medal contenders.

Current forecasts show that Team GB will finish one place above Japan – who are forecasted to win 53 medals.

More surprisingly, hosts France have dropped to fifth in the predicted rankings – despite setting their sights on 52 medals.

It was not possible to assess the potential medal performance for Russia and Belarussian athletes.

Athletes from both countries were banned following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

However, stars from Russia and Belarus who qualify for the Games can compete as neutrals.

The conditions of their inclusion include competing without flags, emblems or anthems of their country.

Elsewhere, Team GB had initially won 65 medals at Tokyo, but the Mens 4 × 100 metres athletics relay quartet were stripped of their silver medals a year later.

The news marked the biggest doping scandal in British Olympic history, and only the third time a Team GB athlete has lost a medal at summer or winter Games.

Data analysts at Gracenote Nielsen wrote: “British success over the past three Olympic Games has been built on having medal winners in at least 20 sports.”

Other nations in the top 10 behind Team GB include Italy, Australia, Netherlands, Germany and South Korea.
