Occasional Digest - a story for you

DRIVERS have been warned over a little-known rule when carrying out car repairs that could land you a £1,500 fine.

It is against the law to carry out works on a motor on the roadside unless it has broken down.

The ban covers repairs, maintenance and servicing of any motor vehicle.

You could be slapped with a fine of up to £2,500 if you break the little-known rule.

Grimsby man Gary Mills was ordered to pay more than £1,500 after he was found guilty of the offence for the second time.

Mills was spotted repairing cars on the roadside in June last year – after ending up in court for doing it in 2022.

Neighbours had complained about late-night repairs on the “rat run” street.

The 39-year-old failed to pay a £100 fine, did not show up to a formal interview with investigators and later skipped court.

Ruling in his absence, a magistrate ordered Mills to pay £1,590 in fines and costs.

The sum covered a £440 fine for the offence, a £440 fine for failing to help the investigation, a £352 victim surcharge and £358 in costs.

Councillor Ron Shepherd said: “A great result for our enforcement teams who work tirelessly to ensure our borough is safe.

“Prosecutions such as this are a prime example of why our teams do the work they do.

“People need to realise that there are rules and laws in place for a reason.

“These are not simply there for our amusement, but to uphold the quality of life for the residents across the borough.

“Anyone found to be breaking these rules will be dealt with accordingly, with no exception.

Shepherd added: “This council has a zero tolerance policy and no one is above the law.”
