Occasional Digest - a story for you

DEAR DEIDRE: Less than a year after I gave birth, I have just discovered I’m pregnant again and I’m terrified to tell my husband.

We already have three children. He’s made it clear he doesn’t want another baby.

I’m 32 and he’s 34. We have a four-year-old, a two-year-old and another aged one.

We are struggling financially and I am feeling exhausted. I have been breastfeeding and so did not have periods and thought it was safe when we had sex.

But last week I started noticing what felt like a baby kicking inside me. I then panicked. I took a pregnancy test and it was very strongly positive.

I must be a few months along, which means it’s probably too late for a termination.

When our youngest was born, my husband and I agreed our family was complete.

He said he loved our kids but there was no way he wanted another child.

Our house is already way too small. We only have two bedrooms and we cannot afford yet another mouth to feed.

I just don’t know how to tell him that we are having yet another baby. I feel so anxious and stressed.

DEIDRE SAYS: It takes two to make a baby. Unfortunately, breastfeeding does not always prevent pregnancy. You can ovulate and conceive again before you get your first period.

This is something you need to deal with together. He’s responsible too.

Make an appointment with your GP so you can find out exactly how far along you are. It may not be too late for a termination. If it is, or you don’t want that, there is financial support available.

First, you need proper medical care and a scan. My support pack, Unplanned Pregnancy, has advice on where to turn for help.
