Occasional Digest - a story for you

BARBIE fans have shared their love for Ryan Gosling’s star-studded performance at the Academy Awards.

The film directed by Greta Gerwig was nominated for eight Oscars – including Best Original Song and Best Picture – but was most swept away by rival Oppenheimer.

But on Sunday night, Ryan, 43, had the entire crowd on their feet while singing one of the movie’s most popular songs I’m Just Ken.

At the beginning of his performance, he stunned in a pink suit while sitting in his seat while his co-star Margot Robbie was spotted laughing in front of him.

As he sang his worldwide hit, Ryan was joined on stage by several backup dancers in suits and cowboy hats – and his fellow Kens: Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and Scott Evans.

Ryan was also joined by guitar legend, Slash.

The La La Land actor had help singing the song from Greta, Margot, America Ferrera, and even former co-star Emma Stone.

‘THE GREATEST MOMENT’

On X, formerly Twitter, fans were left completely stunned by Ryan’s performance.

One fan wrote, written in all caps, “Behold, the greatest moment in Oscar history!! Bravo, Ryan and I’m Just Ken.”

“Ryan Gosling that performance was kind of everything to me,” exclaimed a second.

A third tweeted, “I hope the kenergy never leaves ryan gosling.”

“Emma Stone singing I’m Just Ken Thank you Ryan Gosling,” a fourth typed in all caps.

A fifth viewer said, “Ryan Gosling ATE that performance.”

“I love that Greta Gerwig, Margot Robbie, and America Ferrera freaked out over Ryan Gosling’s Oscars performance as if they were at a One Direction concert,” someone else exclaimed.

THEIR NOMINATIONS

Barbie was nominated for eight awards: Best Picture, Actor In a Leading Role (Ryan), Actress In a Supporting Role (America), Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Original Song (Billie Eilish’s What Was I Made For), and Best Adapted Screenplay.

After finding out that he was nominated, Ryan released a statement regarding Margot and Greta not being nominated.

He said, “There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film.

“No recognition would be possible for anyone on the film without their talent, grit, and genius. To say that I’m disappointed that they are not nominated in their respective categories would be an understatement.

“Against all odds with nothing but a couple of soulless, scantily clad, and thankfully crotchless dolls, they made us laugh, they broke our hearts, they pushed the culture, and they made history. Their work should be recognized along with the other very deserving nominees,” he concluded.

FAN BACKLASH

Margot and Greta’s snub also disappointed fans around the world as they shared their brutal thoughts on social media.

“Nominating Im Just Ken for best song but snubbing Greta and Margot from Oscar noms is just laughable I can’t lol,” one said.

A second said, “Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig received no Oscar noms for Barbie … but I’m just Ken is up for Best Original Song… Did we miss the whole point of the movie? Did we not get it? Be honest.”

“Ryan gosling & im just ken both getting oscar noms but margot & greta didnt????? the irony man,” stated a third.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, OPPENHEIMER

Hollywood’s biggest night hit the small screen on ABC on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at a sprightly 7 p.m. ET.

This was an hour earlier than usual, or two, considering the daylight savings time change.

As usual, the 96th annual Oscars were held at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.

Late-night star Kimmel served as host and flatlined with a “cringe” joke about Robert Downey Jr.’s past drug use.

The Oscars saw the year’s most critically acclaimed movies, actors, directors, and everyone behind them duke it out.

Oppenheimer (13 nods), Poor Things (10), Killers of The Flower Moon (10), and Barbie (8) led the tally.

Fans felt the Kenergy as Ryan Gosling performed “I’m Just Ken” from Barbie with Mark Ronson, and Billie Eilish drew tears with “What Was I Made For?” from Barbie.

Presenters included Mahershala Ali, Bad Bunny, Emily Blunt, Nicolas Cage, Jamie Lee Curtis, Zendaya, and a nude John Cena.

Awards-wise, the Barbenehimer summer craze has fizzled out, and it was a statuesque night for the Robert Oppenheimer biopic.

Best Supporting Actor was won by Oppenheimer’s Downey Jr. (his first).

And Christopher Nolan’s three-hour atomic bomb opus won Best Picture and Best Director (Nolan’s first Best Director nod).

Da’Vine Joy Randolph won Best Supporting Actress for Alexander Payne’s (potentially plagiarized) The Holdovers.

Anatomy of A Fall won Best Original Screenplay, and American Fiction Best Adapted Screenplay.

Best Actress seemed like a toss-up with Anatomy of A Fall’s Sandra Hüller squaring up against Poor Things’ Emma Stone and Lily Gladstone of Scorcese’s Killers of The Flower Moon.

But in the end, Emma Stone won out, which snubbed Lily of being the first native Oscar winner.
