A MOTORS expert has revealed the three best family cars you can get your hands on for less than £5,000.

One of the used cars is described as a “gorgeous” motor from a famous brand which comes complete with stylish diamond headlights.

The petrolheads at Top Gear have drawn up a list of the best family cars you can get on a budget.

Under the bonnet is a 1.6-litre diesel engine giving you an average of 65.7mpg between a top up at the pumps.

There’s also the Volvo reliability which pretty much comes as a standard feature with their vehicles.

The one the Top Gear team plumped for had 103,000 miles on the clock, so you can expect there’s plenty more life left for family outings.

While the models that come with either a 1.9 or 2-litre versions are easy to find for under £5k, a 3.2 V6 version isn’t so easy to lay yours hands on for that price.

While the one found by the experts may have had some wear and tear, they still thought the 159 Sportswagon still looked “brilliant”.

It comes with the iconic Alfa Romeo grille from the Noughties and the spherical diamond headlights out front.

When considering a cheap estate, performance probably isn’t going to be a top priority.
