The petrolheads at Top Gear have drawn up a list of the best family cars you can get on a budget.

First off the blocks is this offering from the Swedish manufacturers which comes with a fancy ‘R Design’ and could be yours for £4,450.

Under the bonnet is a 1.6-litre diesel engine giving you an average of 65.7mpg between a top up at the pumps.

There’s also the Volvo reliability which pretty much comes as a standard feature with their vehicles.

The one the Top Gear team plumped for had 103,000 miles on the clock, so you can expect there’s plenty more life left for family outings.

While the models that come with either a 1.9 or 2-litre versions are easy to find for under £5k, a 3.2 V6 version isn’t so easy to lay yours hands on for that price.

While the one found by the experts may have had some wear and tear, they still thought the 159 Sportswagon still looked “brilliant”.

It comes with the iconic Alfa Romeo grille from the Noughties and the spherical diamond headlights out front.
