Aston Villa vs Tottenham betting preview

This is a big game in terms of the race for a place in next season’s Champions League.

UEFA format changes mean that both the Premier League’s fourth and fifth-placed finishers may qualify although, as things stand, that isn’t the case – it will depend upon how well the remaining English sides perform in Europe.

Villa currently hold the advantage – they lead Spurs by five points having played a game more – although victory for the visitors would put them back in charge in the top-four race.

However, current form would suggest that’s not massively likely.

Spurs have won just three of their last seven and five of those games have been at home. Of the two they’ve played on the road, both have been drawn and it’s now just one win in six on their travels.

Ange Postecoglou’s side have developed a worrying habit of conceding the opening goal – it’s happened in six of those seven referenced matches – and if that happens again here, they’ll face an uphill task.

Villa have won 10 of 13 at home this season and, following something of a blip, appear to be back on track having won their last three league games. They also drew away to Ajax in midweek in the Europa League.

That Thursday night outing in the Netherlands wasn’t ideal ahead of this contest but boss Unai Emery made several changes with a number of stars given limited game time with the weekend in mind.

So, they look the more likely winners here with goals on the menu, according to the stats.

Aston Villa vs Tottenham key stats

  • Tottenham have scored in their last 38 Premier League games, although that is still some way short of Arsenal’s record of 55.
  • Only Nottingham Forest and Burnley have conceded more set-piece goals this season than Aston Villa.
  • Spurs have won just one of their last six away league games, while Villa have won 10 of 13 at home this season.
  • Leon Bailey is averaging a goal or assist every 84 minutes in this season’s Premier League, a competition high.
  • Richarlison is confident of being fit to return for Spurs (although his manager is less so), while Pedro Porro may also feature. Unai Emery will restore a host of stars to his XI after the midweek Europa League outing but Jacob Ramsey is unlikely to be among them due to a foot injury.

Cristian Romero anytime scorer

For those who like a big price, Romero may well be worth a shout.

The Argentine World Cup winner bagged a crucial goal last weekend as Spurs moved up to sixth place in a table which shows who has scored the most set-piece goals.

Only lowly Forest and Burnley have conceded more goals from such situations than Villa and so Romero looks worth a try to score what would be his fifth goal of the campaign.

Leon Bailey to score or assist

Bailey is in red-hot form right now and has conjured up a ‘goal involvement’ every 84 minutes, on average, in this season’s Premier League.

Twelve of the 16 have come at Villa Park where the hosts have scored for fun – their tally of 35 home goals (in 13 games) is bettered only by leaders Liverpool.

This Spurs defence has conceded in 16 of their last 17 games. They will likely do so again here and, if so, Bailey looks worth backing to be involved.

Aston Villa to win and both teams to score

Villa look to have the better form here and I feel they should be shorter at a venue where they’ve won 17 of their last 20 Premier League games, especially given Spurs’ recent struggles on the road (see above).

Spurs nearly always score though – it’s now 38 games in a row in which they’ve done so. However, the fact they are only fifth in the table shows you how defensively they’ve been pretty disappointing.

The Villa/BTTS option looks a good way of getting a chunky price about the hosts
