The youngster, named locally as Shay, was found fighting for her life in Rowley Regis yesterday.
Despite medics’ best efforts the 10-year-old could not be saved, with police quickly launching a murder probe.
West Midlands Police said last night that the woman was believed to be known to the girl.
Today plush toys and flowers had piled up near the scene.
They labelled young Shay a “princess” and said she’d be missed by so many.
One card read: “Shay. You will be soo missed by everyone.
“Rest easy princess.”
Another read: “I will miss you Shay, so much.”
Others said “RIP, gone too soon”, and “we will miss you”.
Detective Inspector Dan Jarratt said last night: “A young girl has tragically lost her life and our thoughts are with her loved ones and all those impacted by this terrible passing.
“We know how shocking and distressing this will be for the community and we’ll continue to have a police presence and offer our support in the area over the coming days.
“A suspect has been arrested and detectives are fully investigating the circumstances around this sad death.”
