A COUNCIL tenant who was homeless for four years before getting a property, has revealed the absolute state her council house was in when she moved in.

Lola Carmen revealed that she had to spend over £500 in repairs on the Leeds council property when she moved in, because of the terrible mess it was in.

The 19-year-old, who lives in the house with her mum and brother took to social media to share footage of the council property.

In the garden, piles and piles of rubbish had been left lying on the grass and the fence had almost completely collapsed.

Lola said her family had to pay for all of this stuff to get removed, as the council said the waiting list for collection was too long.

She added that the council had told them that cleaners, painters and decorators had been in to the property “every day”, but it was covered in mould and dirt when she moved in.

It’s in no way liveable

The council tenant revealed that the windows hadn’t even been insulated, and were just stuffed with tissues.

The door frames were completely rotten and the plug sockets were held on with plaster.

“That isn’t even legal”, she said.

Lola and her family set to work renovating the property straight away, but was met with some difficulties.

She said that the walls of the house were so damp that paint didn’t even stay on them and just bubbled up, so they had to keep adding layers and layers on top of each other until it stuck.

Lola added that the plumbing in every room leaked, so her family had to buy grout and insulation to do fix the issue herself, as she can’t afford to pay someone else to do it.

I was given a house that was an absolute mess in a council house swap – but thanks to my DIY skills, I made it look amazing on a budget

Worst of all, the house is infested with alive and dead rats.

“There’s two massive dead rats rotting underneath the boiler and alive ones scurrying around in the cupboards”, she said.

“An experience that was supposed to be exciting after being homeless has been terrible and expensive”, she said.

Lola said that she didn’t expect that the house would have been decorated, but thought that it would have been cleaned before she moved in.

“It’s in no way liveable”, she said.

Lola’s video, which was posted under the username @lolscarmen has likely left many open-mouthed, as it has racked up over 533,000 views on the video sharing platform.

TikTok users raced to the videos’ comments section to share their thoughts on the state of the property.

One user said: “That is not habitable.

“If you have to get any outside contractors make sure they bill the council for the work, that is shocking.”

Another user said: “I’m so sorry, this is awful.

“I was street homeless and it was better than this”.

A third user said: “How can they put people in places like this, it’s not habitable”.

Council houses are provided by local authorities to those in need.

They are often cheaper than renting private housing and can also offer greater security from eviction.

Council houses are allocated to prospective tenants via a points based system, with those in greater need given homes first.

The council will contact you about an available property when you are high enough up the waiting list.

More than one million people are currently waiting for social housing in the UK.
