Occasional Digest - a story for you

A SUPERMARKET giant with 855 stores will close for one day next month – find out if your local branch is affected.

Asda has announced that it will shut for Easter on Sunday, March 31, with only a few select stores expected to remain open.

With Good Friday and Easter Monday coming either side of the bank holiday weekend, opening times may also vary on these two dates.

But in compliance with Sunday trading laws, in which shops over 280sq metres in size have to remain shut on Easter Sunday, Asda will not be open for trading.

Usual opening hours of 7am-10pm are expected to remain the same for the majority of stores across Friday, March 29, Saturday, March 30 and Monday, April 1.

But Asda had advised customers to use their online Store Locator to check individual store opening times.

A spokesperson for the supermarket chain told The Sun that the following opening times apply to most of Asda’s stores across Easter.

  • Thursday 28th – 7am-10pm
  • Friday 29th – 7am-10pm
  • Saturday 30th – 7am-10pm
  • Sunday 31st – Closed
  • Monday 1st April – 7am-10pm

The same also applies to Asda Express convenience stores, with opening hours for most stores listed below.

  • Thursday 28th – 7am-10pm
  • Friday 29th – 7am-10pm
  • Saturday 30th – 7am-10pm
  • Sunday 31st – 7am-10pm
  • Monday 1st April – 7am-10pm

Other major supermarkets are yet to confirm their store opening times across Easter this year but they are likely to be the same, if not similar, to 2023.

Last year, Lidl closed on Easter Sunday before opening up again on Easter Monday between 8am-8pm.

Morrisons pulled the shutters down on its England and Wales stores on Easter Sunday, although its Scotland branches remained open as normal.

Aldi branches were also open on Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Monday.

It’s normal for supermarkets to close larger stores over the Easter weekend.

Under government rules, any shops in England and Wales larger than 280 square metres have to close on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day.

But smaller convenience stores don’t have to.
