Occasional Digest - a story for you

A rollercoaster 10-year sailing partnership reaches “one last shot” at an Olympic medal for Fynn Sterritt and James Peters this summer.

The 35-year-old Scot and Englishman Peters, 31, will take to the water in Marseille at the Paris Games after missing out on the Great Britain team for Tokyo 2020.

That blow prompted Sterritt to step away from the sport, but he returned re-energised to renew a former world number one pairing whose past achievements include World Cup gold in 2018 and 2019.

“You’ve got to believe but there are times that belief starts to slip a little bit,” Sterritt told the BBC.

“James and I took a bit of a break after not getting selected for Tokyo. We weren’t sure whether that was the end of our Olympic careers.

“We still had the same burning desire to give it one last shot. Here we are and now we’ve got to go and see how things unfold in Marseille.

“It would mean everything [to win a medal]. James and I have been together for 10 years but our journey started a long, long time ago when we were nippers. This is probably the end of my Olympic career and we’re going to give it everything we’ve got.”
