He came sixth during his first campaign before finishing as runners-up to Manchester City in his second.

Mourinho, now 61, was then sacked by the Red Devils in December 2018 following a poor start to the campaign.

The former Chelsea, Tottenham and Real Madrid boss subsequently baffled many by suggesting that finishing second in the Prem with Man Utd was among his best ever achievements.

Reflecting on that campaign while chatting to Rio Ferdinand on his Five show, Mourinho said: “Maybe there is a chance we win that league, no?

“Because if Man City are caught in financial fair play, breaking the rules.

“Maybe they lose a few points and we win that title.”

After Ferdinand burst out laughing, Mourinho added: “Jokes apart, we did the best we could do.”

Asked if he still truly believes that, he then added: “Of course I believe… and nobody did better!”

Reflecting on his time at Old Trafford, Mourinho looked back with pride, and revealed where he lays the blame for his failure to deliver a first Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson‘s 2013 departure.

He said: “I loved my time there.

“I was so proud of going there, and even prouder a couple of years later going back as a Sky commentator and when I felt the reaction of the crowd I was like ‘wow’.

“I always felt we were together and that reaction touched me. To be a coach in the same club as Sir Alex, you have to feel the pride and responsibility.

“Historical club, legendary players, I was very happy and proud to be there.

“Not easy, I don’t think media helped me, including yourself maybe, I felt that was not with an intention of hurting, it was more people didn’t understand the dimension of the job and potential difficulties.

“The structure was not very fluid.”

Since leaving Man Utd, Mourinho has been sacked by Tottenham and Roma.

Having been out of work since last month, Mourinho has admitted that he is already raring to go again.

He was sensationally claimed to be keen on a return to Old Trafford.

But asked about those reports, Mourinho claimed they were “not from me”.
