An Ipswich mother charged with stabbing a three-month-old baby was suffering from “serious” postpartum depression, a court has heard.

The 26-year-old woman’s matter was heard at Ipswich Magistrates Court on Tuesday, after she was charged with attempted murder.

Emergency services were called to a property in Ripley, south-west of Brisbane, about 5.30am on Saturday to reports of an alleged wounding.

The child was provided immediate first aid at the scene, before being taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Police established a crime scene at the home, before taking the woman into custody and charging her with one count of attempted murder.

The woman’s lawyer did not make an application for bail but said she had been seen by a psychiatrist while in custody, who suggested she was suffering from postpartum depression.

“It would seem that this postpartum depression is … serious,” he told the court.

She is due to face Ipswich Magistrates Court again on March 1.
