Occasional Digest - a story for you

LIVERPOOL and Burnley meet in the Premier League at Anfield on Saturday.

The Reds will be looking to bounce back from their 3-1 defeat to Arsenal last weekend and Burnley may well feel the backlash. The Clarets haven’t won in their last five Premier League outings and are firmly rooted in the bottom three. The last thing Vincent Kompany’s side needs is to be going to Anfield when Klopp’s team are looking to get a defeat out of their system.

Liverpool vs Burnley betting preview

Jurgen Klopp’s team saw their lead at the top of the Premier League cut to two points last weekend. Man City has a game in hand on the Reds and is now effectively back in control of the title race. Also hot on Liverpool’s heels are Arsenal, who are also just a couple of points behind.

There is still a lot of water yet to flow under the Premier League bridge though. And all three of Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal will likely drop points between now and the end of the season. But one thing none of the title-chasing trio can afford to do is drop points at home to teams in the bottom three.

After losing in such circumstances to Arsenal at the Emirates, Jurgen Klopp’s team just need a convincing win to get going again. And Burnley looks like the ideal opponent to provide just that.

In all competitions, Liverpool have lost once in their last 12 matches. Burnley has won just twice in their last 12 in all competitions. The contrast in form is huge.

Burnley’s two wins in that sequence of games came against Sheffield United and Fulham.

They defeated the Blades 5-0 at Turf Moor on December 2nd, and they won 2-0 away at Craven Cottage on December 23rd.

In 2024, Kompany’s team have so far played three league games, drawing two, and losing one. They have also lost 1-0 to Spurs in the FA Cup. They’ve conceded six goals in the three league games. One to Luton, which in fairness, should never have stood. Three away to Man City, and two at home to Fulham. It’s hardly inspiring stuff.

At a raucous Anfield on Saturday, the Clarets should have no answer for a rampant Liverpool.

Liverpool vs Burnley best bets

Liverpool are very short odds to beat Burnley this Saturday, so we’ve named some alternative best bets that can be found below. The odds we use are from the best sportsbooks per our expert reviews. Odds in the bettings tips are also subject to change.

Over 3.5 goals (Sky Bet)

Liverpool has scored 15 goals at Anfield in their last four matches. Five of them were against Championship side Norwich City in the FA Cup, but they’ve also put four past Newcastle and four past Chelsea (there was a 2-1 win over Fulham in the EFL Cup).

As well as scoring plenty, Liverpool have also conceded in all four of those matches. So with Burnley now having a genuine goal threat in David Datro Fofana, a bet on over 3.5 goals looks a safe one.

Diogo Jota to score anytime (bet365)

One man who hasn’t missed Mohamed Salah in recent weeks is Diogo Jota. The Portuguese international has stepped up to the plate in the Egyptian’s absence, scoring and assisting regularly since the departure of Klopp’s star striker.

The facts are that Jota has been in good form for some weeks now, even before Salah left for AFCON. In his last seven Premier League matches, Jota has scored five and assisted two. He has also scored in three of his last four league matches at Anfield.

Hjalmar Ekdal to be shown a card (Spreadex)

Our final tip is for Hjalmar Ekdal to be shown a card. The Swedish international has picked up two yellow cards from four starts and two appearances off the bench in the Premier League this season.

In Burnley’s recent 3-1 loss to Manchester City at the Etihad, he was booked. And with his team likely to be under the cosh at Anfield, he has a chance of adding another card to his collection.
