Civil servant Anna and consultant Jack appeared on Escape to the Country, looking for a property bigger than the homes that they already had in St Albans.

The recently engaged couple, who were hoping to start a family, already had their individual flats in Hertfordshire and shared a dog named Dexter.

The couple explained to Briony that their new home needed to have lots of outdoor space for their pet.

Anna and Jack, a gardening enthusiast, also disclosed that they were eyeing Buckinghamshire as it’s ideally located between their families and offers easy access to London.

The couple also wanted a local pub nearby, describing it as the heartbeat of the community.

Ultimately, the first time buyers told the BBC host that their forever home needed to be a detached property with four bedrooms, a practical utility room for muddy boots and paws, and a huge kitchen.

Briony said: “A garden is important for Dexter, and they want to be on the edge of the village community with a nearby pub.”

Even though nothing was extraordinary about their expectations for their future home, their budget left fans gobsmacked.

The presenter revealed: “Each on the property ladder already, by cashing in they have a healthy budget of £850,000 for their first house together.”

After the budget was revealed, fans couldn’t believe their ears, so they took to X(formerly Twitter) and shared their views.

One user wrote: “Mums got Escape to the Country on, and a couple younger than me have just rocked up with a budget of £850k for their first home and let me tell you, the deep guttural ‘oh f** right off’ I just let out could be heard from space.”

Another added: “Don’t you hate it when 20 somethings have £850k at their disposal?

“Where’s the life suffering before success? £800k average price in Buckinghamshire.

“UK housing prices are obscene. Half a mil for a terraced property. They need a 30% haircut. #escapetothecountry.”

A third commented: “A young couple probably in their 30s on escape to the country today have a budget of £800k. F*** off…”

A fourth person shared: “£850k, first home budget, 20 somethings… wow #escapetothecountry.”

But not everyone felt peeved as another viewer typed: “Couple on #EscapeToTheCountry are so charming.

“How lovely it would be if all twenty-somethings were like this. They have such an appreciation of the countryside, lifestyle and architecture.

“Hope they live happily ever after.”

However, despite Briony showing them some stunning properties, Anna and Jack didn’t make an offer on any of the homes.

As the episode concluded,  it was revealed that the couple had decided to buy a home in Hertfordshire instead to be closer to friends and family.
