Savannah, who lives in Texas, US, decided to move out of the 1,800 sq ft house in the city that she once lived in and into a converted 600 sq ft shed in the country instead.
She has since shared a very candid glimpse into her life – admitting that while her home is “not perfectly aesthetic,” at least she doesn’t have a mortgage to pay.
In a clip shared to TikTok (@thehotmesshomestead), she discusses what it’s like to live in a “shed house” and explains: “We have absolutely every climbing structure, trampoline, play dome, sandbox you could think of because we think kids should be outside more than they are inside.”
The mum-of-three goes on to point out that despite assumptions, not every single wall is painted white, and there’s enough space to store plenty of books.
“We live in a shed house, and yes, we still love to host. We just may sit on the floor so you can take the sofas,” she continues.
“And we don’t have a pantry, so we had to get kind of creative.”
Savannah then notes another question she’s frequently asked: “How do you do it?”
She replies: “Um, by not having a mortgage payment, that’s how.”
The savvy mum adds that the tiny shed has a full-size fridge and freezer and a full-size stackable washer dryer in the bathroom.
However, she admits: “Sometimes when you’re sitting down and the washer is on its final spin cycle, you kind of go like this – just for a few minutes!”
She goes on to explain that they don’t have a dishwasher and have to hand wash every single dish and that “every square inch is precious” so they have to hang their paper towel holder on the side of their fridge.
The “crunchy mum” also points out that despite her home being 600 sq ft, “it’s not unfair” on her kids – adding that they “still have their decorations…plenty of toys, and a regular full-size twin bunk bed.”
She still also hosts play dates all the time, explaining: “It is just absolute feral chaos inside – and that’s totally okay.
“We’ll just send the kids outside to play while we sit inside and drink our Doctor Pepper.”
Despite being tiny and “definitely not fancy”, she admits: “I still would rather hang out in it way more than I ever wanted to hang out in our 18 square foot house in the city.”
Another common question Savannah says she’s asked is whether they’re going to stay in that forever,
“No, probably not,” she says.
“We can’t predict the future, but we probably will build at some point. This is just a nice little in between.”
Savannah concludes: “Yes I live in a shed house and it is actually way harder to keep clean than the 18 square foot house I had.
“I spend way more time cleaning this little space because all the clutter is right in your face all the time.
“You have nowhere to hide it. You can’t escape it.”
