Feb. 7 (UPI) — Russia showered Ukraine with a wave of drone and missile attacks hitting some of the country’s largest cities over Wednesday morning, officials said.
Authorities said the Russian attack killed at least five people and injured more than 30 as of noon in Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, Kyiv, Lviv and Mykolaiv. In the capital Kyiv, four died and 21 were injured.
Kyiv’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko said three were injured in the Dniprovskyi district of the city after explosions were reported. A car repair shop caught fire after the attack in the Holosiivskyi district.
“Rescuers are extinguishing the fire at the site of falling debris,” Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said, according to Ukrinform. “Damage was caused to residential and energy infrastructure. Power engineers are already working to restore the power supply.
“At the same time, the power grid remains stable and no power outages are planned.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on X said while all services remain intact, civilian structures took a beating.
“In Mykolaiv, dozens of houses were destroyed and one person was killed,” Zelensky said. “More than 10 people were injured in Kyiv. There may be people underneath the rubble. Some communications, including high-voltage cables, were damaged in the capital.”
He said two were injured in Kharkiv while the damage was still being accessed in the western city of Lviv.
“My condolences to all who have lost loved ones,” Zelensky said. “We will definitely retaliate against Russia. Terrorists will always face the consequences of their actions. I am grateful to all of the medics, rescuers and utility workers.”
