A young female jockey is in hospital with serious injuries after a fall at Strathalbyn Racecourse, south-east of Adelaide.

Emergency services were called to the racecourse at about 1:40pm after jockey Kelsey Hannan fell from a horse.

The 21-year-old from New Zealand was riding Iva Dream in race one of the Strathalbyn Cup, when the horse stumbled shortly after crossing the finish line, dislodging her.

A SA Ambulance Service spokesperson said Hannan suffered spinal injuries and was unconscious when paramedics arrived at the scene.

Hannan was airlifted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

In a statement, Racing SA said the meeting at Strathalbyn had been postponed until further notice.

“The intention of Racing SA is to run the remaining seven races on Friday,” a spokesperson said.

“Racing SA will work together with its partners to confirm these changes.”

Hannan moved to South Australia last year, but immediately spent 10  weeks on the sidelines after breaking her jaw while riding.
