Occasional Digest - a story for you

DEAR DEIDRE: SINCE my brother was arrested for talking to underage girls online, I have been struggling to cope.

I am too scared to go outside as I’m worried other people will tar me with the same brush.

I am anxious and depressed all the time.

He is 29 and I am his 33-year-old brother. We were not brought up to behave like this. He has gone too far and I don’t consider I have a brother any more.

To say I feel angry and betrayed by his behaviour would be an understatement.

I feel as though my life has fallen apart. It has been one thing after another with him.

He has been in trouble before for anti-social behaviour and vandalism.

He had to go and answer some questions and has been released on bail. I hope he will get a custodial sentence because as a family we are absolutely furious with what he has done.

How can I begin to move forward?

DEIDRE SAYS: When someone is arrested it can be a challenging time for the whole family. You are likely to have very mixed feelings.

What happened was out of your control and was not your fault.

Hold your head up high, talk about what you are going through with your friends and eventually people will see you as entirely separate from your brother.
