JD WETHERSPOONS has put an iconic Edinburgh pub up for sale after a sewer pipe burst underneath it.

The pub chain confirmed the Foot of the Walk bar in Edinburgh’s Leith will be its latest bar to be sold off – as dozens remain for sale.

It comes one year after a damaged sewer pipe burst underneath the premises forcing it to close for repairs.

The Edinburgh Evening News reported the damage was caused during building works for the nearby tram extension.

Named after its location, the former 2,000 seater Palace picture house was transformed into a ‘Spoons after a spell as a pool hall.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “We can confirm that Wetherspoon will be putting The Foot of the Walk on the market.

“Wetherspoon does, on occasion, put some of its pubs up for sale and this is the case here.

Mr Gershon added: “The pub will continue to trade until it is sold.”

The Glasgow ‘Spoons is just the latest drinking hole to close.

The chain – which has 827 pubs across the UK – warned last September that it was putting dozens of its pubs up for sale.

In December, 20 ‘Spoons were up for sale with eight under offer, leaving fans gutted that their local branch could be lost forever.

The Percy Shaw in Halifax called last orders on January 7 after the venue was sold to a new owner.

Other pubs were up for sale in Battersea, Bristol, Peebles, and Shipley.

It comes as a number of UK pubs have closed their doors for good amid a turbulent economic backdrop.

Increased energy and wage costs are piling further pressure on businesses.

But, ‘Spoons continues to run sales and excite its loyal fanbase.

From March 6 punters will get the chance to sample a range of 30 different real ales including five from overseas brewers.

The festival will run for 12 days from Wednesday 6 March to Sunday 17 March.

Wetherspoons fans will get the opportunity to sample beers from Belgium, Germany, Italy, Taiwan and the USA.
