Ghana picked up just two points from their three games – failing to reach the Afcon knockout stages as a ‘lucky loser’.

And hours after their surprise KO, former Newcastle and Brighton boss Hughton was given his marching orders, with his coaching team “dissolved”.

The Ghana Football Association revealed the news late on Tuesday night in a statement.

It read: “Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.

“The executive council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.

“The GFA will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”

Hughton was named Ghana boss in February 2022, shortly after Otto Addo stepped down following their poor World Cup campaign.

The Black Stars finished bottom of their tricky group with one win from three games.

Ghana had been 2-0 up in the 91st minute of their final group game at Afcon 2023.

Geny Catamo pulled one back from 12 yards in stoppage time to hand Mozambique a lifeline.

And Reinildo Mandava jumped highest at the back post to steer home a header from a corner to equalise in the 94th minute to consign Ghana to their fate.

But Mozambique only won the corner thanks to an incredible lapse in concentration from goalkeeper Richard Ofori.

Mozambique star Mexer sliced an effort from outside the box that was bouncing harmlessly out of play – before Ofori intervened.

The keeper appeared to try to catch the ball before being caught in two minds, leading him to instead palm out the ball for a corner.

And that blunder proved costly, not only for Ghana’s Afcon hopes, but Hughton’s job.
