The 82 year old actor told of a funny memory in which he and his close pal and co-star staged a huge fight in front of the show’s production crew that left them “quaking in their boots“.
David and Nicholas, 62, came up with a plan to fake the argument in a bid to find something to do to pass the time during long breaks in filming on Only Fools and Horses.
The pair worked together on the popular sitcom for 22 years before it came to an end in 2003.
In an interview with The Mirror, he spilled all on one of their ‘furious rows’ which saw the pair insist they would ‘never work together’ again.
David said: “One day, Nick and I were in our very small caravan on location.
“We were all fed up because nothing was happening so Nick and I said ‘Why don’t we stage a huge row and you can storm out and say you’re leaving and I can shout at you saying don’t you ever come back again?’
“The whole crew went stiff.
“Five minutes went by and the producer and director came to see me and they were quaking in their boots.
“They asked what’s going on and I told them to go see Nick.”
At this moment, he knew the game was up as he continued: “When they got to him, I couldn’t contain myself any longer and roared with laughter.’
“They went from white to purple in their faces.
“I don’t think the producer was much impressed.”
Fans of the sitcom are still obsessed with it more than 20 years on from its final episode, and were delighted to see Sir David dressed in character earlier this month.
Sir David had attended the annual two-day Only Fools and Horses Appreciation Society convention in Milton Keynes.
And now the star has opened up to The Sun’s TV Mag about whether the show could make a comeback.
He said: “Well, to be honest with you, we would like that to happen very much because not only did we enjoy it so much, but so did most of the British public. Because of that, we would love to do it.”
But before Only Fools fans could get too excited at the prospect, he added: “I don’t think we could do another episode of Only Fools And Horses because the brains behind it, Mr John Sullivan, is unfortunately no longer with us.”
Indeed John passed away in April 2011 aged 64 from pneumonia.
Meanwhile actor Roger Lloyd Pack – who played Trigger – died in January 2014, while John Challis, who played Boycie in the show, died in September 2021.
