Thankfully, car and van leasing company Vanarama have shared some helpful pointers on how to make your fuel go further in 2024.

One of these is simply making sure your motor is kept clutter-free, as carrying a heavy load will mean your car doesn’t perform as well on the road.

The extra weight could lead to you putting your foot down, or changing down a gear to keep the speed up – all of which uses additional fuel.

Another simple tip is make sure the air conditioning is switched off instead of being run unnecessarily.

Getting into the habit of turning it off when you don’t need it is a must – as the cooling system can be quite a drain on fuel when in operation.

Perhaps the most interesting piece of advice is the ‘bowl of water’ trick, which essentially involves driving as if you have a bowl of water on your passenger seat.

This works because every time you apply your brakes, energy that you’ve paid for in fuel is lost in heat generated by the brake pads and discs.

Vanarama experts also suggest not revving the engine unnecessarily when accelerating, moving gently through the gears and keeping the engine speed to a reasonable level.

Last month, ATS Euromaster urged vehicle owners to keep their motors clean to save money on fuel.

The hack can, they claim, reduce fuel consumption by up to 10%, allowing motorists to go further for less.

This comes as a mum has revealed what a common dashboard symbol really means and how it can save you vital time when refuelling.

Elsewhere, motorists are just realising that they can prevent condensation from forming on their windscreens using an ingenious homemade hack.
