We all want our big day to be perfect – but he revealed her perfume completely ruined the day.
Taking to Reddit, he asked: “AITA for asking my mother-in-law to leave our wedding because her perfume was bothering me?”
He revealed he was marrying the love of his life and that he and his mother-in-law had no prior problems leading up to the big day.
He said: ” I’ve usually gotten on pretty well with my new in-laws.
“Usually, my mother-in-law doesn’t wear perfume or at least not any that I’ve been able to notice. My wife had her mother be her matron of honour so she was standing with us upfront.
“It was a small area and with her right next to my wife, I was able to smell her perfume.
“Shortly after the ceremony started I started to get watery eyes and sniffles. Our ceremony was supposed to only last 20 minutes max so I thought I would just push through unless it got worse.”
He revealed the symptoms only got worse after the ceremony after his new mother-in-law hugged him and suffered with an itchy throat and a headache as well.
While he took medication, he said it did nothing to ease the symptoms and he was left feeling ‘out of it’.
The groom was gutted as he couldn’t take family photos with his mother-in-law as the scent was causing so many problems.
His wife asked her mum to wash off the perfume but she revealed she had sprayed it all over her clothes.
He then suggested she leave and buy some new clothes that he would pay for but she refused.
“I asked my mother-in-law to either please to do that or to leave and we’d visit later with cake because it was getting to the point that I would have to leave,” he continued.
The groom said his wife and mother-in-law objected as she wanted her mum there the whole time.
“I understand the day was big for my wife and she wanted her mother there and I wanted her there too but I wasn’t able to enjoy my own wedding,” he revealed.
“I wound up sitting outside with some of my family and groomsmen. I started to feel better and when I did, my wife came out and asked if I’d be going back inside then.
“I told her no so long as her mum was still there and hadn’t changed.”
He added that the night ended with his wife staying at her parents rather than going home with him.
He asked Reddit users if he was in the wrong and people were quick to say he did everything right.
One person wrote: “NTA. Your wife and her mother refused to make reasonable accommodation for your allergy. This does not bode well for your married life.”
Another commented: “It was definitely an accident but the response wasn’t great. The groom didn’t get to enjoy his wedding reception and the bride and MIL didn’t care.”
“But dude…you might want to examine why your new spouse doesn’t exhibit any care or consideration for your health,” penned a third.
Meanwhile a fourth said: “I’m sorry dude but your wife has zero concern about your well-being. It’s a flag as red as they come.”
“It’s incredibly sad that your wife and MIL acted that way. NTA and I hope you can work it out,” claimed a fifth.
Someone else added: “NTA, you even offered to pay for a change of dresses you were absolutely reasonable in my opinion, I understand your wife getting annoyed but this is too much.”
