David Warner has flown in via helicopter for the Thunder’s latest Big Bash League game — a blockbuster Sydney derby against the Sixers at the SCG.
Key points:
- David Warner was at his brother’s wedding in the Hunter Valley
- He has played nine games for the Sydney Thunder since being a part of their inaugural BBL squad
- The Thunder are out of finals contention, but Warner said he wants to entertain for the last three games
Less than a week after ending his Test career on the same ground, Warner flew in from his brother’s wedding in the Hunter Valley and touched down a few hours before the clash with Steve Smith’s Sixers.
“It was good, it was quite cool,” Warner told Channel Seven.
“To see Sydney from up above on a cracking day was amazing. It was amazing to see my brother wed with his wife Emily. It was a great evening.
“I’ve done my utmost best to get down here and hopefully put some runs on the board.
“I might look like a bit of a goose if I don’t get any runs but it’s my contribution to not just the BBL but Australian cricket.
“I want to be out here. I want to entertain. I want to try and help our team win the next three games.”
Warner was part of the Thunder’s inaugural BBL squad back in 2011, but international duties meant he only played one game in each of the first three seasons.
He then missed eight seasons altogether before returning for the final six matches of the Thunder’s campaign last summer, but was not able to get into his work, with a top score of 36 as the Thunder lost to the Brisbane Heat in a rain-soaked eliminator final.
The Thunder are out of the finals race this season, but it is hoped Warner’s return will introduce some spark for the final three games of the season.
After the Sydney Smash, the Thunder travel to Canberra to take on Adelaide, before finishing the season back in Sydney against the Melbourne Renegades on Wednesday.
