A Moscow court on Wednesday shut a nightclub for 90 days after it hosted a controversial “almost naked” party before Christmas.

The closure comes amid President Vladimir Putin’s domestic crackdown on Russia’s showbiz elite for sexually suggestive behavior, while Moscow’s grinding war on Ukraine plows on abroad.

On December 20, blogger Anastasia Ivleyeva hosted a party at the Mutabor club in Moscow which sparked criticism from Orthodox Church officials and pro-war activists as well as pro-Kremlin lawmakers over the revealing costumes worn by revelers.

One of the attendees, rapper Vacío, who showed up wearing only a sock to cover his genitals, was fined, sentenced to jail, then forced to enlist in the Russian military after a Moscow court ruled the event was aimed at “propagating non-traditional sexual relationships.”

Russia’s assault on Ukraine has gone hand in hand with a renewed crackdown on its LGBTQ+ community at home, including an expanded law against the promotion of what it calls “non-traditional” sexual relations. Russian authorities present it as an existential battle against degenerative Western values.
