Occasional Digest - a story for you

RUMOURS about a successor for the Nintendo Switch have been swirling, and consumers can’t wait to get their hands on a new console.

Although nothing has been officially announced by Nintendo, people have discussed that Nintendo Switch 2 models have already been played by developers.

It was claimed that there were demo kits of the next generation Nintendo console shown to developers at 2023’s Gamescom.

If this is true, it could be that the next Nintendo console could be on sale for players as soon as this year.

GameIndustry.biz spoke to a number of industry analysts to find out what their predictions are for 2024.

A number of interesting comments came from Dr Serkan Toto about the likelihood of a Switch successor.

The first interesting point is that he claims the Nintendo Switch Pro was in development but has since been scrapped.

He says: “I can say a ‘Pro’ model actually did exist and certain developers were already working with the dev kit.”

Many speculated that a pro model might be introduced, much like how Nintendo has sold XL versions of consoles in the past to boost sales.

Nintendo did release an OLED model with an improved screen, but in terms of hardware, the consoles are functionally identical.

Toto predicts that Nintendo will move straight to the next generation console and it will be Nintendo’s most expensive yet.

He says: “I believe the next hardware will drop next year for $400. There is a high chance that games will cost more, too: $70.

“Nintendo might add some bells and whistles to the device, but it will be similar to the current Switch.”

The most expensive Switch model, the OLED, currently retails for $350, which is more costly than the original model was at launch.

Nintendo has been hesitant in the past to match PlayStation and Xbox’s $70 price point for games, with the most expensive Switch game, Tears of the Kingdom, retailing for $60.
