Jürgen Klopp’s joy at seeing Liverpool secure a 4-2 win over Newcastle in the Premier League turned into dismay when he briefly lost his wedding ring in the post-match celebrations.
Key points:
- Klopp was applauding the crowd when he noticed he had lost his wedding ring
- A TV camera operator located the ring on the field at Anfield
- Liverpool went three points clear at the top of the standings following the result
It needed the sharp eye of a TV camera operator to locate the ring in the middle of the pitch at a rain-drenched Anfield.
A relieved Klopp responded by kissing the ring in front of the TV cameras.
“I had a massive shock,” Klopp said. “But it’s back.”
The incident happened in the moments after Liverpool’s defeat of Newcastle United that lifted Klopp’s team three points clear in the standings.
Klopp had congratulated his players and was heading towards Liverpool fans.
While applauding the crowd, he realised he no longer had his wedding ring on.
He scoured the grass near where he was standing, even asking a steward if he would not mind helping in the search.
Klopp was then told where the ring was by a Sky Sports camera operator.
“I lost it once [before] in my life,” Klopp said.
“I needed a professional diver because it was in the sea.
“From time to time when I lose one or two kilos, it’s not the right fit anymore.”
Mohamed Salah’s second-half brace made up for a missed penalty as Liverpool kicked off the new year on a positive note.
Liverpool now has 45 points from 20 matches, with Aston Villa (42) in second place on the standings.
