Car enthusiasts found that when alcohol is applied to the car windscreen it can actually stop ice from forming.

The hack emerged in the comment section of a YouTube clip by Smart Fox.

One user shared: “I wash my windshield in the evening with a paper towel and pharmaceutical spirit.

“In the morning, at -10C, the windshield is cleaned and has no icing on it.”

Alcohol-based solutions like pharmaceutical spirits and rubbing alcohol have become widely recognised solutions for tackling ice in the motoring industry.

This is because alcohol has a low freezing point, meaning the substance causes frozen particles to break up and melt and leaves slim chances for ice to form.

Experts at WD-40 also recommend rubbing alcohol as a safer alternative to ice to prevent windshield frost.

They explained: “Saltwater can prevent the ice from re-freezing whilst you are out and about.”

They added: “However, the saltwater can damage your car whereas a 2:1 rubbing alcohol solution will not damage the car and it has the same effect on it.”

It works by “melting [the ice] and lowering the freezing point of water to prevent it from re-freezing”.

The main issue with salt water is that corrodes metals five times faster than freshwater, creating damage that can only be replaced.

Another simple and accessible remedy is vinegar, which contains acetic acid with a lower freezing point than water.

The best use of salt water and rubbing alcohol is to spray windows the night before.

We also recently shared a hack for getting rid of the ice once it appears.

In a video posted to TikTok by Nicole Jaques, the savvy driver shared her super-fast deicing method.

The trick involved putting a bag of warm water on your windshield.

“All you need to do is fill a bag with warm water when the weather‘s caused your car to ice over and then rub it over your windshield and in seconds you’ll be ready to go.

“Even better, you’ll keep your hands nice and toasty while you’re doing it,” she said.

And another more obscure deicing method shared recently requires an orange and a microwave.

You just need to microwave the orange for less than a minute and then rub it on your car’s windscreen.
