Occasional Digest - a story for you

THIS year’s Christmas number one has been ‘revealed’ as Wham!’s tune Last Christmas.

The song, performed by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, originally hit the charts at number two in 1984.

Since then the tune has gone on to chart in the top 40 at a number of places, including number one.

With just hours to go until this year’s number one is revealed… Ladbrokes have predicted that it’s going to top the charts once more (1/50).

Meanwhile Sam Ryder’s You’re Christmas To Me is second (16/1), followed by The Pogues (18/1) and Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You with 50/1.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes LIVE said: “We’ve seen so much change at the head of the Christmas number one betting in the absence of LadBaby this year, but the latest odds suggest Wham! have got the festive top spot wrapped up.”

It comes after many thought that the passing of The Pogues’ Shane McGowan would take their famous hit Fairytale of New York to number one.

LadBaby AKA Mark Hoyle and his wife Roxanne have bagged the top spot for the last five years.

However last month it was revealed that they wouldn’t be releasing anything new.

Mark told Radio 2: “I’m not saying I’m retiring from music.

“I’m not saying this is me done for ever.

“If Mariah Carey wants to get in the studio and duet All I Want For Christmas Is Sausage Rolls, she knows where I am.”
