George Martin’s new deal comes just 15 months after he last signed new terms with Leicester Tigers

England lock George Martin has signed a new “multi-year” deal with Leicester Tigers.

The 22-year-old has featured 69 times for Tigers, having come through their academy to make his first-team debut in 2019.

Martin, who has won nine England caps, came off the bench in Leicester’s 2022 Premiership final win over Saracens.

“George is an exceptional young player with the potential to grow in our program,” said head coach Dan McKellar.

“At 22, he’s already got the physical tools and the mentality to perform at a high level and I’ve been really impressed with him since he’s returned to the club from the World Cup.”

Nottingham-born Martin featured six times for England at the recent World Cup, and started in their narrow semi-final defeat by South Africa.

The lock says he is “excited” to work with Australian McKellar, who took charge of Tigers in the summer and has overseen five successive wins since mid-November – including two group-stage victories in the European Champions Cup.

Martin returned to the side for their latest victory – a 27-24 win against against Stade Francais in Paris.

“It was great to get back on the field last week and Exeter [in the Premiership] is another big challenge for our group,” Martin told the club website.external-link

“But playing for this club, in Leicester is special [and] I’m looking forward to getting back home to Mattioli Woods Welford Road.”
