Police believe a shooting outside a Melbourne strip club in the early hours of Sunday morning may have been a targeted incident.

Emergency services were called to Lonsdale Street, near the intersection of King Street in the CBD, following reports a man had been injured just after 4am.

The man, aged in his late teens or early twenties, was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police were told a suspected gunshot was heard before the man was found.

Armed Crime Squad detectives said the man has not been forthcoming with information about the incident.

The area has been cordoned off and police have been interviewing witnesses at the scene.

The shooting is being treated as targeted but police said the exact circumstances are still being determined.

Police said there was no ongoing threat to public safety.
