But a few design tricks can create a cosier pad and help keep energy bills down.
Try one of these tips to stay toasty for less . . .
REARRANGE: Reorganise your furniture to make the most of heat sources.
Sofas, beds and other large items placed in front of radiators will absorb warmth and stop it circulating around the room.
Instead, make sure there is a gap of at least a foot between furniture and radiator.
Moving your bed away from colder external walls and closer to internal walls can also help you stay warmer at night when the heating is off.
GET RUGGED: Rugs provide extra insulation, while also giving a room character.
You can get shaggy rugs from £16.95 at kukoonrugs.com — and if you sign up for the mailing list you’ll get ten per cent off your first order.
The heat benefits are especially notice-able if you have hard flooring, but rugs also work with carpet.
If you have floorboards, it could be worth investing some time and money in filling gaps. It won’t affect the look but could significantly improve heat retention.
You can do this with DraughtEx, £29.20, from Amazon, which estimates you can save up to £40 on energy bills, for just a single room.
CLEVER CURTAINS: Windows are respon-sible for a huge amount of heat loss, even if double-glazed.
You can help keep in warmth by making sure curtains or blinds are closed when it turns dark.
The thicker the curtains, the better they will be at insulating.
Add thermal lining to make curtains warmer. Linings start from £10 at Dunelm.
Curtains aren’t just helpful for windows, they can make a huge difference over a draughty front door.
A letterbox insulator can also help stop draughts through the front door. You can get one from around £7 at Screwfix.
