But you can soften the blow by earning a bit of money back each time you shell out.
There are lots of different ways to make your spending pay — here’s how . . .
CASHBACK SITES: You can get money back on spending at most high street brands, by going through a cashback site.
Topcashback and Quidco are two of the biggest sites and you can easily search the retailer you want to shop with.
You can currently get three per cent back on purchases at John Lewis through the sites but it’s not just retailers.
You can be paid to take out insurance as well as signing up for broadband and other bills through the sites.
INSTANT MONEY: The downside of Topcashback and Quidco is that it can take several months, in some cases, for cashback to track and get paid out.
However apps Jamdoughnut and Hyperjar allow for instant payouts.
Instead of shopping via the sites, you essentially buy gift cards through the apps and get money back on these.
You then use the cards or codes given by the apps to pay for your spending with your chosen retailer.
BANK ON IT: You can earn money on spending through some bank and savings accounts.
For example, Santander’s Edge and Edge Up accounts give one per cent cashback on selected household bills paid by direct debit, as well as spending at supermarkets and travel costs paid by the card.
Halifax’s reward account offers users cashback with selected retailers when you buy with your debit card.
And Monzo customers can also earn money when spending at brands including Asda, Boots and Deliveroo.
Bear in mind, monthly fees apply to some of these accounts and you should weigh up if an account is best for your circumstances.
