Occasional Digest - a story for you

An early report into a shooting that killed a police officer in regional South Australia has found the two surviving officers who were involved performed their duties with “courage and bravery”.

South Australia’s Acting Police Commissioner Linda Williams said she reached a preliminary position while investigating the incident involving three police officers at a rural property at Senior, in the state’s south-east last month.

Police allege 26-year-old Jaydn Stimson fatally shot Brevet Sergeant Jason Doig, 53, and also shot another officer, Michael Hutchinson, when the officers arrived at the property to conduct inquiries.

Sergeant Doig died at the scene while Sergeant Hutchinson, 59, sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

A third officer, Constable Rebekah Cass, 31, was not physically injured and rendered assistance to the injured officers and the suspect.

Acting Commissioner Williams said while the inquiry and investigations were ongoing, it was appropriate to acknowledge the actions of all officers.

“Both Sergeant Hutchinson and Constable Cass placed themselves at great personal risk to render first aid to Brevet Sergeant Doig and handcuff the accused under what was an incredibly confronting and distressing incident,” she said.

“It is now evident to me that Sergeant Hutchinson and Constable Cass performed their duties on the night with courage and bravery.”

An official police funeral to honour the life and service of Sergeant Doig will be held on Monday at the Adelaide Convention Centre, and will also be live-streamed.

Condolence books have been made available for members of the public to sign online and at police stations across SA.

SA Police said Sergeant Hutchinson and Constable Cass were both recovering at home.

The state’s Major Crime Investigation Branch has charged Mr Stimson with the murder of Sergeant Doig and the attempted murder of Sergeant Hutchinson.
