Man bitten by shark near remote Clack Island off Cape York peninsula

Occasional Digest - a story for you

A man in his 20s has been bitten by a shark off the coast of Cape York peninsula in far north Queensland.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said a rescue helicopter was flying to Clack Island (Ngurromo), a remote island off the eastern coast of Cape York, after the man was bitten on the upper arm by the shark.

The spokesperson said ambulance officers were still on their way to treat the man, and he would be transported to Cairns or Townsville depending on the severity of his injuries.

Clack Island is located within the Flinders Group National Park off the coast of Cape Melville, about 340km north of Cairns.

Unauthorised entry is prohibited, to protect the island’s cultural values.

Visitors who are not recognised Flinders Islands traditional owners or Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service staff require a permit to go there.

More to come.
