All-rounder Stokes was only able to play as a batter at the World Cup because of ongoing knee problems

England Test captain Ben Stokes has undergone surgery to address problems with his left knee.

The 32-year-old all-rounder was unable to bowl in the summer’s final three Ashes Tests and only featured as a batter at the World Cup in India.

He announced earlier this month he would have surgery following the tournament.

Stokes is aiming to regain fitness in time for England’s five-match Test series in India in January.

He posted a picture on Instagramexternal-link of himself on crutches outside London’s Cromwell Hospital, with a caption that read: “In and out. Under the [knife emoji] done. Rehab starts now.”

Last week, the all-rounder made himself unavailable for the 2024 Indian Premier League to manage his workload and fitness.

Stokes was Chennai Super Kings’ most expensive signing for the 2023 IPL but played just twice due to injury.
