Occasional Digest - a story for you

IF you want to give your home a chic makeover, chances are it’ll cost you a fortune – but now one DIY whizz has proved it doesn’t always have to be the case.

According to Kayleigh Sherbourne, a crafty mum, all you need is a basic IKEA unit, some paint, a few buys from Wickles, as well as time and patience.

The end result, she proudly shared in a video posted on TikTok, was a chic coffee table, the total costs which she reckoned came to under £50.

After snapping up the KALLAX unit from the popular homeware store, the DIY lover gave it a good clean before sanding it and applying ply wood to the bottom section.

To give the otherwise rather basic unit more structure and some accents, Kayleigh then also decided to add some panelling around the sides and painted it in a calming pastel sage colour.

Meanwhile, to make the top section of the coffee table, the craft fanatic, who posts under the username @do.it.yourself.mum, used timberboard, which she had picked up from Wickes.

For a more rustic look, the DIY mum stained the wood panelling on top with browning wax that can be purchased from a number of retailers, including Amazon and The Paint Shed.

Although initially Kayleigh, from the UK, had given the table longer metal legs in black, she ended up ditching the design for a shorter wooden pair.

Chatting about the project, the parent wrote: ”I turned this KALLAX unit literally upside down…into a coffee table with storage.

”I was staring at this KALLAX unit the other day wondering what I could that was different from before.

”A lightbulb literally went off in my head and I decided to make it into a coffee table.

”I then searched the internet for styles I liked and got started.

”I was going to sell this, but I actually really like it in my living room,” the mum revealed.

Safe to say the incredible makeover left social media users amazed, as over a hundred people flocked to comments to praise Kayleigh.

One person, who felt rather inspired by the transformation, wrote: ”eyeing my kallax that I hate and going to b&q this weekend!”

Another chimed in: ”Such a good idea! I’d add wheels to the bottom for ease of movement when vacuuming, but either works.”

”Absolutely love this it looks amazing,” a third was seriously impressed.

”And I was just proud of myself for sanding a small amount of the fireplace whilst the little one sleep, that’s nothing, this is amazing!!” a TikTok fan chuckled.

”This is SO nice and functional!” a fellow fanatic of the unit glow-up penned.
