'Overriding Democracy'

May 17, 1987

The Iran-contra affair causes me to reflect upon how far we have come during the last 35 years. During the 1950s Congress investigated Communists and “fellow travelers.” Now Congress is investigating loyal anti-Communist American citizens. I have a question. Who is going to investigate the investigators?

If I have to decide who to trust in the care and protection of the U.S.A., I’ll opt for people like Marine Lt. Col. Oliver North and Rear Adm. John Poindexter over the lily-livered weaklings presently in the House and Senate.

If it turns out that laws were broken by these military men, then the laws should be changed. The intent of these men was to aid the removal of communism from the Western Hemisphere, and to liberate hostages. I view these to be honorable aims worthy of respect–not vilification.
