Occasional Digest - a story for you

A RARE car once owned by a film and comedy icon is now up for grabs for just £12,000.

The 1975 Jaguar XJ6 has been described as “talking piece of history” and was the last vehicle owned by the Hollywood star.

Selling on Car & Classic, Terry Thomas’ automatic Daimler Sovereign 3.4 LWB is available for purchase with a rather inexpensive price tag.

For as little as £12,000, car and movie enthusiasts can buy the navy blue classic motor that features velour interior and a full sun roof.

The seller has claimed that this is a “rare opportunity” for individuals to get their hands on a piece of history that comes with full written documentations.

According to the advert, the vehicle was passed down to Thomas’ niece in 1984, from whom the seller purchased the car from directly.

Thomas was best known for his roles in Private’s Progress, The Green Man, Blue Murder at St Trinian’s, and I’m All Right Jack.

The actor had a trademark gap between his two front teeth and fans quickly fell for his witty humour and plummy accent.

But in 1971, Thomas was tragically diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, after falling ill while performing in a play in Sydney, Australia.

His doctor had noticed a slight tremor in his hands, and the diagnosis was confirmed when he returned home to the UK.

He kept his symptoms a secret for as long as he could, but eventually went public to quash rumours that his shaking and slurred speech were alcohol related.

But the star continued to work, taking on lower budget movies and advertising deals for Bird’s Eye and Benson & Hedges.

He also voiced Sir Hiss in the Disney classic Robin Hood.

In January 1990, Thomas died at a nursing home in Surrey at the the age of 78.

The theme from Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines, one of his best-loved films, was played at his funeral.

Although the former movie star’s Jag isn’t in best shape and “needs renovation”, the interior and exterior parts are all intact.

A plush blue velour covers the spacious front and rear seats, and the steering wheel appears to be wrapped in black leather.

Glossy wooden panelling covers below the dashboard area, and old-school metal window-winders are attached to each of the dusty doors.

The Daimler Sovereign was widely known to be a luxury automobile between 1966 and 1983.

According to Car & Classic adverts, other Jaguar Daimler Sovereigns are selling for anywhere between £2,500 to £19,950.

It comes after an iconic car from a cult-classic movie went up for sale for a whopping £35,000 last month.

The stylish 1976 Cadillac Eldorado car is up for grabs after sitting in a Warner Brothers warehouse in the US for 20 years.

The Cadillac’s previous “owner” was Canadian actor Mike Myers‘ “groovy, baby”-catchphrase comedy character Austin Powers.

Wheeler Dealer star Mike Brewer is also selling a classic sports car for £60,000, after his Ford Fiesta Mk1 went missing in June.

The TV star spent around 1,500 hours during lockdown revamping the custom-build Chevrolet Camaro.
