Occasional Digest - a story for you

Against the stunning backdrop of the Filoli Estate in California, Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden engaged in a pivotal meeting that has captured the world’s attention. This marked their first face-to-face encounter since their handshake in Bali, Indonesia, last year.

The leaders delved into critical strategic issues shaping China-U.S. relations and impacting global peace and development. The meeting, set against the backdrop of the most important bilateral relationship globally, underscores the necessity for positive and cooperative engagement.

The relationship between China and the United States, despite its challenges, has consistently moved forward. The enormity of these two nations precludes any notion of turning their backs on each other. Attempting to remodel one another is unrealistic, and the consequences of conflict and confrontation are untenable for both sides.

In today’s world, major-country competition is not the prevailing trend, and it cannot offer solutions to the challenges faced by China, the United States, or the world at large. The Earth is vast enough for both countries to thrive, and the success of one presents opportunities for the other.

As the leaders navigate this crucial meeting, the global community watches with hopeful anticipation. The past year witnessed fluctuations in China-U.S. relations, from optimism following the inspiring common understandings in Bali to concerns arising from subsequent issues.

Amidst global turmoil, the APEC Summit presents a fresh opportunity for a thaw in China-U.S. relations. The world looks forward to improvements in the most significant bilateral relationship, fostering a trajectory of healthy, stable, and sustainable development.

To ensure the success of this summit and a positive trajectory for the bilateral relationship, the United States must approach the meeting with sincerity. Reciprocity is vital, requiring the abandonment of any unwarranted feelings of superiority and a genuine commitment to implementing agreements reached by both leaders.

A rational and clear-eyed assessment of China-U.S. ties is imperative. Recognizing the inevitability of China’s development and dispelling outdated narratives is crucial. The United States must align its actions with its words to rebuild credibility and avoid detrimental behaviors that strain relations.

China’s extended hand of friendship and cooperation, symbolized by President Xi’s visit, offers an opportunity for the United States to display responsibility and collaboration. The world cannot afford to miss this chance for the two nations to find common ground and steer their relations in a positive direction.

Looking beyond the immediate meeting, the cooperation between China and the United States holds immense global significance. As the world’s two largest economies, their collaboration is essential for providing global public goods, addressing climate change, advancing science and technology, fostering economic growth in developing countries, and contributing to global peace.

The APEC meeting in 2023 is a crucial moment for China and the United States to reengineer their cooperation, counter the notion of a Thucydides trap, and pave the way for a shared future and prosperity for all. The world eagerly awaits the positive outcomes that can emerge from this significant diplomatic engagement.

Definitely the meeting will have a far reaching positive impact in the days to come, yet, a lot more have to be done. The spirit seems high, and both sides seems serious. It is expected that the geopolitics might be soften and tension might be diffused in the very near future.

President Xi is one of the most powerful president in the world, with its total grip over domestic politics as Secretary-General of the Communist Party of China, he enjoys and strong support within the party and being the Chairman of Central Military Commission of China, he is strengthened with the armed forces of China. He is in a position to implement all the decisions made during the APEC Summit. He is a strong person and man of worlds, and fulfills his commitments. From Chinese side, one should be very much optimistic that the positivism is just a head in the global affairs.

However, the next year is a presidential election year in the US and people keeps eyes on the in-coming president for implementation of the decisions. However, there is no reason for being pessimistic. We must expect better days to come, as the geopolitics are extremely disturbing currently and prevailing atmosphere cannot sustain forever, a change is always unavoidable after all peak worsts. Be optimistic and struggle for better tomorrow.

It is the masses who will determine their destiny and masses are well aware of current scenario and urged a change.
