McLaren supercar driver clocked at terrifying 137mph on the M5 lands in court as cops reveal worst speeders of the year – The Sun

Occasional Digest - a story for you

A MCLAREN supercar clocked terrifying speeds of almost 140mph on the M5 – but soon paid the price.

The £200,000 luxury motor was caught recklessly barrelling down the M5 near West Bromwich as fellow motorists watched in fear.

But, the McLaren 72OS’ idiot driver was swiftly brought to justice and slapped with an excessive speeding prosecution.

This means they could have been hit with a seven to 56 day driving ban, or longer.

In the most serious cases, involving very high speeds more than 30mph over the limit, drivers can be jailed.

Fines can also reach in excess of £25,000 if a motorist is risking lives with their dangerous speeds.

The McLaren driver, who was travelling at 137mph, is the worst case of speeding seen on West Midlands roads this year, as reported by Birmingham Live.

This comes as an Audi A1 was clocked going at 133mph on the M5 near Frankley.

But, bizarrely in this case the driver was not prosecuted and the case was dropped.

A Volkswagen Golf was also captured hurtling down the M54 near Wolverhampton at 130mph – which saw the driver prosecuted.

They follow 16 motorists who have been spotted racing at 110mph or over this year.

A selfish BMW driver was caught out by a speed camera as they went at 125mph on the M6, between the M54 exit for Wolverhampton.

Elsewhere, another Audi – this time an S7 – was clocked speeding at 115mph on the M6.

Yet again, an Audi driver was caught doing 113mph on a non-motorway road.

The reckless driver sped along an A-road before being snapped by a speed camera.

Shockingly, the case was cancelled despite potentially putting other lives at risk.

This comes after a fleet of McLarens was brought to a halt by cops.

The five supercars were pulled over by police in a diesel BMW for doing more 100mph along the A303 in Wiltshire.

One officer said: “They could have caused a pile-up, killing innocent people.”

In a post online, cops said: “This isn’t a race track so take your ‘driving experience’ and sign the traffic offence report.”

One traffic officer added: “The drivers might have thought they were Lewis Hamilton but it was lunacy to go that fast in such a powerful car on an ordinary public main road.

“Let’s hope the courts throw the book at them.”

Plus, another owner of a brand new McLaren 720S decided to debut his super car by speeding – and narrowly escaped death.

Having bought the model on Friday 13 July, the unnamed driver totalled it the very next day after wrapping it around a tree.

The entire vehicle was left in a crumpled heap by the side of the road and shocking pictures beg the question how the driver survived the horror smash.

Meanwhile, McLaren sadly announced they have actually stopped production of the 720S Coupe.

The premium sports car, rolled out in 2017, was quietly axes at the end of last year.

The 720S, which had a twin-turbocharged V8 engine, went from 0-62mph in just 2.9 seconds.

But McLaren is now replacing it with the 750S – which has already sold out until 2024.

The 750S will reportedly have up to 740 horsepower and a price tag upwards of £300,000.

It will also be able to hit 62mph from 0 in 2.8 seconds – one millisecond quicker than the 720S.
