A South Australian court has frozen some assets of the state’s alleged “bicycle bandit”, including a seaside property worth more than a million dollars.

The South Australian District Court ruled a restraining order against Kym Allen Parsons to prevent him from dealing or disposing with some of his property.

This includes five ANZ bank accounts, one of which contains more than $200,000, a Hyundai Terracan station wagon, and a house at O’Sullivan Beach valued at $1.19 million.

Prosecutor Anthony Schapel brought the application before Judge Stretton in court.

“The effect of it [the restraining order] of course is to prevent any dealing with that property by way of sale, by way of a devaluation of that property, say by an increased mortgage, withdrawals on bank accounts, sale of the vehicle and so on,” Mr Schapel said.

In response, Mr Parsons’ defence lawyer Alda Shkambi said her instructions were “to seek an adjournment of the proceedings”.

“Because of my client’s bail conditions, he is unable to leave his property, we are attending his property on Friday to take instructions in relation to these matters,” she said.

Judge Stretton granted the restraining order against the 73-year-old.

“The order essentially is to preserve all the property, pending any final disposition of it,” he said.

“Given that is the primary thrust of the order sought and that there is a power of revocation, circumstances indicate that that’s appropriate.”

Mr Parsons allegedly carried out 10 bank robberies while armed with a rifle in small South Australian towns between 2004 and 2014.

Police say more than $250,000 was stolen during a string of robberies at banks in small towns including Lobethal, Blackwood, Mount Pleasant and Tanunda from July 2004 to June 2009.

The 73-year-old allegedly made his escapes on a bicycle.

During a search at Mr Parsons’ home earlier this year, police found 4,000 rounds of ammunition and six unregistered firearms concealed in PVC pipes.

Police alleged they were able to match Parsons’ DNA to one of the crime scenes.

Mr Parsons, who is terminally ill with stage four cancer, was arrested in October but released on home detention bail.

He will next face court in February next year.
