Richarlison has scored two goals and contributed three assists in 11 appearances for Tottenham across all competitions this season

Tottenham forward Richarlison has had an operation on a groin injury and is expected to return to training “in the coming weeks”.

The Brazil international had said he had been “suffering for eight months”.

Richarlison started seven of Spurs’ first 10 Premier League games this season but was an unused substitute in Monday’s loss to Chelsea.

Spurs saidexternal-link the 26-year-old will “commence his rehabilitation with our medical staff immediately”.

The club added Richarlison would then be “returning to training in the coming weeks”.

Richarlison signed for Tottenham from Everton for £60m in July 2022.

Speaking before having surgery, he told ESPN Brazilexternal-link: “The last few months haven’t been easy for me. I’ve been suffering with my health.”

Spurs lost defender Micky van de Ven and playmaker James Maddison to injury during their chaotic 4-1 Premier League defeat by Chelsea, while Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie must also serve bans following their dismissals in that match.

Manager Ange Postecoglou, whose side are second in the Premier League, is also currently without Ivan Perisic, Manor Solomon, Ryan Sessegnon and Ben Davies.

But Richarlison, left out of Fernando Diniz’s latest Brazil squad for November’s World Cup qualifiers against Colombia and Argentina, said it was time for him to focus on overcoming his own issues.

“I’ve been suffering for eight months, fighting for the national team and my club,” Richarlison said. “I think the time has come to rest, take a break.”
