The ingredient is not mentioned on the pack, and poses a serious risk for coeliac disease sufferers.

They cannot digest gluten — contained in wheat — and can quickly develop symptoms ranging from rashes to trouble breathing and even unconsciousness.

In the worst cases, sufferers could go into anaphylactic shock, where their throats balloon and they can choke to death.

The NHS says at least one in every 100 people is affected.

The urgent product recall was issued through the Food Standards Agency.

It affects all 500g packs with use by dates up to October 22.

Customers were told they can return packs for a full refund.

The FSA said: “If you have bought the product and have coeliac disease and/or gluten intolerance, do not eat it.”

Aldi said: “We apologise that this product did not meet our usual high standards.”
