Balogun, 22, joined Monaco in the summer from the Gunners for a fee in the region of £34million.

The striker spent last season on loan in the French top flight and progressed to be one of the best in the competition.

Balogun netted 21 goals in 37 appearances for Stade de Reims which saw him attract interest from across Europe.

However, Balogun appears to still be building his confidence at Monaco as he struggled to convert from the spot against Nice on two occasions.

The first effort brought a good save from goalkeeper Marcin Bułka, although the shot was not far enough in the corner.

The second penalty saw Balogun try to put more power on his shot, however, the Polish stopper was there once again to deny him,

To make matters worse for the USA international as former Chelsea prospect Jeremie Boga went on to score a 91st minute winner for Nice.

The game ended 1-0, which saw the happy visitors rise to the top of Ligue 1.

Monaco and Balogun however have had to settle for second place in the meantime.

Monaco manager Adi Hutter gave his support to Balogun as the Austrian suggested it was down to bad luck.

He said: “He was unlucky today, but we win together and we lose together.

“We have to help him a lot because he is frustrated too. He wanted to score the second penalty, but sometimes this is football in the end.

“We have to help him and we will. In the end, we have good conversations and positive communication.

“In the future, he will help us a lot. He is a young striker. This evening isn’t one of his best, but as I said, we win together, we lose together.”

Balogun has featured three times in the French league for Monaco this season, scoring one goal.
