An evacuation alert has been issued for all residents within 150 metres of a property in an inner-Launceston suburb.

The Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) issued the alert due to a gas leak at 18 Rooms Avenue in the suburb of Invermay.

The site is home to the historic homestead of Burwood, which is often used as a wedding venue.

Within the 150-metre radius is the Ampol Invermay petrol station and more than a dozen homes. 

The TFS says exposure to the gas could present an immediate danger and nearby residents should evacuate immediately.

It says people who are away from home should not try to return to the area.

Non-residents should also stay away.

It says further information will be provided at alert.tas.gov.au.
